Leonard Wood

Leonard Wood was the U.S. Army Assistant Surgeon. On April 8,1898 he received a citation from the Army for voluntarily carrying dispatches through a region that was occupied with hostile Indians., making a journey of 70 miles in one night and 30 miles the next day. Also for several weeks, while in pursuit of Geronimo's band and constantly expecting an encounter, commanded a detachment of infantry, which was then without an officer, and to the command of which he was assigned upon his own request.

"About the only thing we have thus far overlooked taking from the Indian is his right to perform his religious rites with their accompanying dances in his own way."

-Carl Moon
