Victorio Receives Presentation Sword
In October 1870 the Indian Office sent Special Agent William Arny to study the situation. He finally induced the Indians to meet them at their Warm Springs retreat. Present were twenty-two chiefs and leaders with 790 of their people, including Cochise and his family and 96 of his Chiricahuas. Cochise was coming to realize the attrition of his tribe; his loses, though smaller than those of the enemy, could not be recouped easily by his small band. He said that he and his people had killed many white men, but if the government would furnish them with food and clothing he would bring in the whole tribe in peace. He did not like the White Mountain area, but was willing to consider the Alamosa. Victorio said that within a month there would be 1,000 to 1,200 Indians collected there. It was common at that time to give important Indians 'Peace Medals', however, Victorio was given a 'Presentation Sword'. On one side was inscribed "Victorio" and on the other "Council of Peace at Warm Springs - 1870." The sword was acquired by Geronimo who gave it to a mule packer and interpreter named Frank Huston, whom he befriended. Later this historic sword was acquired by Carl Moon.
