Greatest Forgotten Generals

W.S. Stewart,General Francisco Villa and General Hugh L. Scott
General Hugh L. Scott
was ordered by Washington to help solve the Navajo
problem at their reservation near Beautiful Mountain, New Mexico, in the
spring of 1913. Since about 1908 there had been many conflicts between
the
Navajo and the management of the Indian Agency there. Scott chose Father
Anselm Weber, the Catholic missionary to the Navajo and Chee Dodge the
most
prominent Navajo at the time to help him solve the situation. After much
negotiation the clever and personable Scott solved the problem.
General Hugh L. Scott
Scott
later
wrote an account about this incident in his autobiography "Some
Memories of a
Soldier", Century Co. 1928. The account is an absorbing one and
gives a
clear explanation of the situation between the Navajo and the whites
during
the early part of the Twentieth Century. Soon after Scott was ordered by
Washington to go to El Paso, Texas to work on the Mexican border
problem.
"Some Memories of a Soldier" will be available in 2001 by the
Maurose
Publishing Company.
